Maurice Labro's (1959) workshop in the Brabant village of Velp looks more like an artist's studio than a garage. It is the masterpieces of automobile history that he is working on: he restores handmade sports cars, especially aluminium ones, but steel ones as well.
The restoration process starts with a careful measuring and consecutive aligning of the chassis. On the basis of this and of all available documentation he draws up an action plan in consultation with the owner.
Next, Labro sets to work, craftsmanly and with inexhaustible patience. The chassis and coachwork components to be renewed are completely handmade so they meet all original specifications. With traditional machines and hand tools, such as a heavy leather sandbag and mallets, Labro forms aluminium and steel into accurately fitting panels.
This way, the most complex forms evolve under his hands, custom-made to repair damaged parts or replace missing parts with authentic new ones. Labro even welds aluminium the classic way: by gas-welding. The result of al these efforts can justly be called masterly: a completely original, classic automobile in perfect mint condition.
De werkplaats van Maurice Labro (1959) in het Brabantse Velp lijkt meer op het atelier van een kunstenaar dan op een garage. Het werk dat hij onder handen heeft, bestaat uit de meesterwerken van de autogeschiedenis. Hij restaureert handgemaakte sportauto's, vooral van aluminium, maar ook wel van staal.
Dat restauratieproces begint met het zorgvuldig meten en vervolgens richten van het chassis. Op basis daarvan en alle beschikbare documentatie stelt hijin overleg met de eigenaar - een plan van aanpak op.
Vervolgens gaat Labro aan de slag, ambachtelijk en met eindeloos geduld. Te vernieuwen chassis- en carrosseriedelen worden volledig met de hand gemaakt zodat ze aan alle originele specificaties voldoen. Met traditionele machines en handgereedschappen, zoals een zwaar lederen zandzak en houten hamers, modelleert Labro aluminium en staal tot nauwkeurig passend plaatwerk.
Zo ontstaan onder zijn handen de meest complexe vormen exact op maat gemaakt om beschadigde delen te herstellen of om ontbrekende delen te vervangen door authentieke nieuwe delen. Zelfs het lassen van aluminium gebeurt bij Labro op de klassieke wijze: met een autogeen laspit. Het resultaat van al die inspanningen kan met recht meesterlijk genoemd worden: een volkomen originele, klassieke auto in een perfecte nieuwstaat. |
